Technical Notes

HTML Generation Tools Visual Notepad has been the tool of choice for two simple reasons.
  • Personal responsibility for every HTML tag entered, for every success or failure.
  • No additional costs or tool-specific learning curve.
Browser Compatibility We have done all of the development in a Windows 98, Internet Explorer 6 environment, but we regularly check new pages using Netscape Navigator 4.7 and Internet Explorer 5. No lesson has been more painfully learned than the differences between Netscape and Microsoft.
To the best of our knowledge, the site works as intended with either browser. If you have encountered exceptions to that, please contact the Webmaster.
Monitor Settings We have done all of the development using a 17-inch monitor, with its display resolution set to 1024x768 and the system fonts alternating between small and large. We regularly check new pages on a 17-inch monitor with display settings of 800x600 and small fonts.
If you experience display problems with the site and have your monitor set differently, please contact the Webmaster.
Style Guides Yale's Center for Advanced Instructional Media, now available in its 2nd edition, was invaluable.
Graphics To date, we've done all of our graphics creation and/or editing using only Microsoft Photo Editor and Microsoft Paint. The reasons are pretty much the same as those given above for using Visual Notepad.
Site Management To date, the only tool we have employed is Ipswitch's freeware FTP client, WS_FTP LE. It has been terrific.
We will need something to track and manage site content at some point, but not yet.
HTML Validation We use the Web Design Group's HTML Validator to test pages under development.
